Beginning of Script in Tibet

  • Beginning of Script in Tibet

According to Shyalu Lochen, Thumi Sambota developed ‘U-Chen’ (capital letter) from ‘Ranjana Script’ and made ‘U-Me’ (small letter) from Urdu Script. Linguists, including Puton, opine that Thumi Sombota developed Sambota Script from City Script, whereas Gedun Chhophel views he did it from Gupta Script. The research of Gedun Chhophel is found to carry meaning. It is famously known that Acharya Thumi Sambota went to India to learn script education at the beginning of the 7th century. Gupta Script was in practice in India. Sambota Script has many similarities with Gupta Script. As time also matches, the view of Gedun Chhophel can be positively considered. From the above reasons, it can be said that it is logical, rational and appropriate to research scripts mutually, and it is the way of linguists also. According to Gedun Chhophel, the script was also the script of the city at that time. If thus analyzed, the opinions of Puton and other linguists match. Linguists have argued that City Script was developed from Gupta Script. Firstly, there was no City Script when Acharya Thumi went to India. Secondly, Ranjana Script developed much later. So, script development based on them seems illogical and irrelevant.

Historical evidence shows that before Acharya Thumi Sambota developed the Sambota Script in Tibet, there was no script in Tibet. Similarly, Thang history of China also supports some points. On the contrary, Bones has said there was a script in Tibet before Acharya Thumi Sambota developed his script. Had there not been any script, Scriptures of Bones wouldn’t have been extended in the past. It is believed to have developed gradually from Shyang Shung Script. To ponder the pre-Sambota Script condition in Tibet, as in the script of history, symbolic writing can be found in rocks, hills, caves, mud pots and other utensils. In fact, they lost their history for long, and it was revived again. In spite of all this, none has discovered any script existing before Sambota Script. So cryptologists demand reasons for the existence of any script of any castes.
